More on houses

Went to see a house near the freeway at about 46th Ave. Instantly liked what I saw. A few days later saw the inside. Quite compact but enough for one or two people. Has great views - set above the street by about 25 feet. Has a spacious deck.

Wow, What a view...

Are there any drawbacks. Yes, three.

1. Principally, noise from the freeway. At street level it is modest. At deck/garden level it is significant. Inside the house it’s not very noticeable.

2. It sits on a hill that in an earthquake may be prone to slippage.

3. 28 steps just to get into the garden. As I add years will I still be able to climb them?

Overall I am definitely favoring it. I’d like to see a couple of other places in the same price bracket before I put in an offer. Why does my agent have to be out of town for a week or 10 days?

Houses I’ve seen and liked

Two houses so far:

E 25th St at 26th Ave

Brookdale Ave at 32nd Ave

The first had the advantage of being in an L-shaped cul-de-sac in the corner of the L. To the right there was an empty plot of land that belonged to the water district. No chance of anything being built there.

Its main drawback was a noticeable crack along the front and one side of the foundation. It may be an old crack but it could equally well be recent. A horizontal crack between bricks in the chimney suggests that it may be recent. the house is on a slope. Replacing a foundation is costly.

The second house was on level ground. It too had a horizontal crack between the bricks of the chimney. The foundation wasn’t visible.

There were two things that concerned me. When I arrived a car was parked with 4 people in it, some of whom were smoking what appeared to be marijuana. Do I want to live near such open drug use?

The other thing was after viewing the house both inside and out, as the agent was locking the door, there was the sound of bass from someone playing music loudly. Something that I live with from time to time, now, and something I want to move away from.

Looking for a house

The last two weeks have been spent looking at houses, talking with real estate agents and learning about financing, loans, and other matters concenred with purchasing a place to live.

I’ve learned a lot. There are very few places that are available at prices I can afford especially in areas that I am prepared to live. Most of the lower priced properties are in areas that I would not be entirely comfortable walking at night. I don’t know if my fears have any foundation in reality. It’s just an impression.

Probably my biggest concern is moving into a place that is less livable because of neighbors than the place I already live. When you buy, you are in it for the long haul.

Windows tip - sleep mode

SLEEP MODE: in all versions of Windows has been unreliable for me. Avoid it.

How?

  1. Open Control Panel
  2. Open Display Properties
  3. Click on Screen Saver and then Power Save
  4. Change the Sleep mode to Never (on laptops do it in both columns)
  5. Click Save or OK until you get back to the Windows Desktop

On to SF

Time continues to hurry by. At this rate it will all soon be over.

Today, I have, potentially, two appointments in San Francisco. The first is dependent on a phone call. The second is fixed.

San Francisco has lost all attraction for me. I used to go there on a daily basis, almost. Now I do not look forward to visiting. I wonder what has changed? Is it me or is it the city?

About an hour later

Spent a little time sprucing up the design. Chose an excellent layout from the themes tab in design. Changed the banner image for a picture taken in Yosemite Valley in 2007.

It seems quite straightforward to use. The options seem to be limited - or they may be limited to free blog owners. I found a three column design I like but there is no indication that I can upload it and use it to replace my existing theme. I have much more exploration to do before I will know the extent of customization available.

Help files here I come - but not until I’ve slept. Goodnight.

Mal El’s Vista

Hello, everyone. By everyone, I mean me. I no longer know very many people. Life has been rather overwhelming in the last few years and I have spent most of my time at home. That has led to neglecting the few good friends I had. Since I feel overwhelmed there hasn’t been much energy for dealing with “borderline” friends. That meant they got left behind.

This is an exercise in how blogs work and what they can be made to do. First post is always the best. ;)
